Hai Van Pass – The Legendary “Cloud Pass” of Vietnam
Hai Van Pass is celebrated as one of the most beautiful and dramatic coastal mountain passes in the world. With its breathtaking scenery, winding roads, and mist-covered peaks, it has become a dream destination for adventure seekers and photography lovers alike.

Location
Stretching along the rugged Hai Van mountain range, this iconic pass forms a natural border between Thua Thien Hue Province and Danang City. It is situated about 80 km from Hue and 20 km from Danang, rising 500 meters above sea level and stretching for approximately 20 kilometers.
Features and Landscape
Hai Van Pass is the highest and most famous pass in central Vietnam. Its name means “Ocean Cloud Pass”, describing its unique landscape where clouds often crown the mountaintops while the sea shimmers below. The route meanders along steep cliffs with one side facing the towering mountains and the other overlooking the vast East Sea — a view that is both magnificent and awe-inspiring.
Historical Significance
Hai Van Pass has long been a natural boundary between the ancient lands of Thuan Hoa (Hue) and Quang Nam (Danang). In the 13th century, this region was part of the Champa Kingdom before being ceded to Vietnam as a dowry when Princess Huyen Tran married King Che Man of Champa.
At the summit stands the Hai Van Gate, an ancient stone structure dating back to the Nguyen Dynasty. The northern side bears the inscription “Hai Van Quan” (“Gate of the Sea Clouds”), while the southern side reads “The Most Majestic Gateway in the World”, carved by King Le Thanh Tong himself in the 15th century.

A Scenic Journey
Traveling over Hai Van Pass offers one of Vietnam’s most unforgettable road experiences. From Danang, as travelers head north along National Highway 1A, the road begins to twist and turn dramatically, like a ribbon weaving through the clouds. The cool mountain breeze rushes past as mist drifts down from the peaks, creating an ethereal, dreamlike atmosphere. On clear days, the panoramic views are simply spectacular — visitors can gaze across the entire city of Danang, Tien Sa Port, Son Tra Peninsula, and even out to Cham Islands, all framed by the golden beaches and turquoise waters below.

Cultural and Emotional Significance
Hai Van Pass is more than just a scenic drive — it’s a symbol of Vietnam’s natural beauty and resilience. It stands as a crossroads between two regions and two histories, where travelers not only conquer nature’s grandeur but also connect with the enduring spirit of those who once traversed this same route in the journey to expand and unify the nation.
Whether you’re chasing the thrill of the open road, capturing the perfect sunrise above the clouds, or simply breathing in the pure mountain air, Hai Van Pass promises an experience that lingers long after the journey ends.
